"There is no country where the love of learning had so early an origin or has exercised so lasting and powerful an influence as in India."
The Three Language Formula is a language policy in India that was
formulated to address the linguistic diversity of the country and promote
multilingualism. It was initially proposed by the Education Commission of
1964-66 and later endorsed by the Indian government. It typically involves:
First Language: The mother tongue or native language.
Second Language: A regional language.
Third Language: English language
The formula aims to preserve linguistic diversity, foster national
unity, enhance cultural understanding, and offer educational benefits. Some
suggestions for implementation of the formula includes having teachers
proficient in two or three languages and providing adequate facilities for
learning new languages.

According to V K. Tewari, “The emphasis on
primary education in regional languages and the introduction of Sanskrit
,following the three language formula, will turn out to be a great boon to the people of the country
especially in the rural area.” Three language formula is a language policy
implemented in India to promote multilingualism and linguistic diversity. It
was initially proposed by the Education commission(1964 ).It states that every
student in India should learn three languages,
-One Indian native language (Hindi)
-One regional language
-English language
It was incorporated because the teaching system
across the several regions was not uniform in the country and also the
formula has been controversial in some regions of India, where the imposition
of Hindi has been a threat to regional languages and cultural identity. The
primary aim of the three language formula is to strengthen national integration
by exposing students to different cultures and languages and fostering respect
for linguistic diversity. The other advantages of implementing three language
formula are global competence and career
opportunities, cognitive development and academic performance, personal and
social benefits.
