42.Argumentative essay :‘Are we too dependent on computers?’

A computer is a machine that can be programmed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically. Computers are quite new inventions as they were invented just about fifty years ago. But the widespread use of computers started some thirty years back. A life without computers is something no individual can think about and the fact that they have become so significant because nothing can replace them. Anyone can find computers anywhere these days. Nowadays people are so much dependent on computers that life deprived of computers is unimaginable. In a short period, computer made a tremendous impact on people’s lives.

One of the things we depend on from a computer is basic research. The computer has allowed anyone to browse the internet for resources and helpful information. This has eliminated the need to go to a public library and find information from printed books. People do not have to find their own answers anymore, they just have to type it into any search engine and find what they are looking for. This has caused many students to become lazy in their class work. Mathematics students no longer have to work out their own problems. There are so many sites on the internet that will solve the problem for you that it takes away from learning.

Negative impact of computers is when a person’s interest in computers becomes an obsession. Everyone knows that we can shop online, even study online, keep record and organize information and can entertain ourselves with endless games or music/movies. However, it is still very important to have a life outside of the cyber world as it is not real life. Suppose computers become the central point of an individual’s life. In that case, their behaviour changes, such as they become lazy and develop anti-social.

The use of technology in our everyday lives has increased dramatically, according to the Office for National Statistics, 77 per cent of UK households have a home computer. This means that over three quarters of the population have the potential to become dependent on the computers found in their homes. According to a study by Penn State, 77% said that society as a whole relied too much on technology to succeed.

That is why in my opinion, computers and other developments of technology are useful and there is no possibility to live without them nowadays, as we got too much used to them. However, we should also work to find the ways of making our dependence on technology less dangerous for us. New developments much be utilized when it is important and helpful for people. Also depends on the user if he would be dependent or not on the computers. Let us be aware of using these computers.

Striking a Balance: Our Relationship with Computers

In today's fast-paced world, the question of whether we are too dependent on computers is a hot topic. On one hand, computers have transformed the way we live and work, making things easier. But, as with anything, too much of a good thing can have its downsides.

Supporters argue that computers are like personal assistants, making tasks quicker and simpler. From sending messages to doing homework, they're undeniably helpful. Imagine the time saved by quick internet searches or the efficiency of automated processes in various industries.

However, this reliance on computers isn't without its challenges. One big concern is the risk of cyber threats. With so much personal information stored online, the fear of hacking and identity theft is real. Our dependence on interconnected networks makes us vulnerable to cyber-attacks, posing risks to both individuals and nations.

Another aspect to consider is how our thinking and social interactions are changing. The ease of getting instant information might be affecting our ability to think critically. Moreover, the rise of online communication might be reducing face-to-face interactions. Building meaningful connections and understanding emotions become a challenge when screens mediate our conversations.

Additionally, not everyone has equal access to computers, creating a digital divide. While some seamlessly navigate the digital world, others face barriers due to limited access or technological know-how. This digital divide reinforces existing inequalities, affecting education and job opportunities.

In conclusion, finding the right balance is key. Computers bring undeniable advantages, but we must be mindful of the risks. It's crucial to protect our digital spaces, nurture critical thinking skills, and bridge the gap for those left behind. Striking this balance ensures that computers remain tools that enhance our lives without overshadowing our humanity.
